The most majestic European game animal. Red deer are native to Europe and resembles elk, only smaller. The stag is 60" tall and weighs approximately 300 lbs., the hind is 48" at the shoulder and weighs about 180 lbs. The stags carry antlers, which they shed early in the spring. The rut takes place in September and October. Calves, usually singles, are born in May the following year.

The hunting season starts August 1 and lasts through December 31. The best time to hunt stags is August, September and October. Red deer are hunted mostly from tree stands or by stalking. Red deer can be taken by centerfire rifles only. Suggested calibers are .270 W, 7x57, .308, .30-06 or similar.
