The most intelligent European game animal, the wild boar is native to Europe. The boar is 40" at the shoulder and weighs 200 - 300 lbs. The sow is about 35" tall and weighs 150 - 200 lbs. Both boars and sows are armed with tusks. Wild boars vary in color from rusty brown to dark black. Piglets are brown with light horizontal stripes. The boar can breed all year round, and 8-10 piglets are born after 4 months of gestation.

Hunting season runs August 1 through January 15 with year round hunting for yearlings and piglets. The best time to hunt wild boar is from November through January, when snow makes the elusive boar more visible. Wild boars are hunted mostly by drives or from tree stands during full moon nights. Boar can be taken by centerfire rifles or by shotguns with slugs. Shotgun use is only allowed during drives. Suggested calibers are .270, 7x57, .308, .30-06 Springfield.
